The Effects of Substance Use Disorder on The Brain, Behavior and the Collaborative Process.

September 11 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

You won’t want to miss this training with Addictionologist Dr. Doug Davies.

In Collaborative Practice, our commitment to seeing the whole person, legal concerns, emotional realities, and hidden dynamics, is what makes our work transformative.

Yet, often, what lies beneath the surface is challenges like addiction: visible through emotional withdrawal, financial instability, or impaired decision-making. If not addressed, these forces can disrupt the Collaborative Process and undercut its potential for durable, respectful agreements.

That’s precisely why today’s training is so essential. We welcome Dr. Doug Davies, a seasoned and compassionate addictionologist who currently serves as Medical Director at The Guest House Recovery Center in Ocala, Florida.

When: Monday, September 11, 2025, 5:00-6:30PM

Where: Live via Zoom (link below) or join us In-Person at: The Collaborative Divorce Center, 647 South Ridgewood Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL 32114 or live online via Zoom.

Dr. Davies will help us:

  1. Learn the neurobiological underpinnings of addiction and trauma and how they influence behavior.
  2. Recognize subtle signs that may appear during collaborative proceedings.
  3. Adapt our process—agreements, parenting plans, assessments when addiction and trauma are present.
  4. Integrate recovery-supportive language and strategies when working with families in crises so that we can increase our ability to support our clients with compassion, professionalism, and integrity

Who: Dr. Davies is fellowship-trained in Addiction Medicine, certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and an active member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. At The Guest House, he leads integrated medical care and creates a healing environment defined by “no judgment, no pressure,” guiding clients toward recovery goals and honoring them as “holy sacred beings”.

Beyond his clinical leadership, Dr. Davies is deeply committed to education: he lectures and mentors at Florida State University on topics ranging from tobacco cessation to the interwoven physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of addiction. His holistic and trauma-informed approach—shaped by personal journey, Indigenous healing practices, and elder guidance—reflects the nuanced understanding we need when working with families in crisis.
